Description
Trilby is set in the 1850s in an idyllic bohemian Paris. Though it features the stories of two English artists and a Scottish artist, one of the most memorable characters is Svengali, a Jewish rogue, masterful musician, and hypnotist. Trilby O'Ferrall, the novel's heroine, is a half-Irish girl working in Paris as an artists' model and laundress; all the men in the novel are in love with her... Trilby is literally tone-deaf... Even so, the magician Svengali hypnotizes her and transforms her into a great diva, la Svengali. Under his spell, Trilby becomes a talented singer, performing always in an amnesiac trance... The Martian is a long, largely autobiographical, novel that describes the lives of two bosom friends, Barty Josselin and Robert Maurice, starting from their school days in Paris in the 1850s... Peter Ibbetson is an account of Du Maurier's childhood in France and his early years in London, but its defining characteristic is its melding of the main character's dream life with real life. Ibbetson and the other main character, the Duchess of Towers, after a series of crises, spend the remaining days of their lives entering each other's dreams. --Wikipedia.com & www.enotes.com.
